At Siwa, the towering dunes of the Great Sand Sea lap the edges of a huge oasis of fertile gardens, palms and olive groves.
Isolated from the march of progress by the vast expanse of the Sahara the people of this desert Eden developed their own vibrant and rich culture. Unique ancient traditions, skills and aesthetics were nurtured and preserved here, locked away and protected from overpowering outside influences.
It is only thirty years since Siwa started to open its closeted secrets to the outside world and the proud heart of its culture still beats strongly. Siwa is where Ellen Raven has its design studio and it is from this pure, rich culture that the inspiration for our unique collections are drawn.
Ellen Raven takes the essence of traditional designs, placing them in a wearable yet elegant context. Our aim is to produce where the expertise and material have their origin.
All fabrics are from Egypt or Libya, some are handwoven by Bedouin women, others by the Egyptian weavers of Kerdessa.
Ellen Raven's clothes are made by hand; the silk embroidery is the work of the women of Siwa, their skills passed from mother to daughter through uncounted generations. Their personal talents and deep heritage shine through on each piece.
Each piece is born of a dialogue between the designer and these passionate artisans.
